Saving, counting and dark mode

Know the Instagram caption character limit before you post, keep captions to reuse, and pick the look you prefer.

Step 1Save a post

Tap Save at the top. Give the post a name and tap Save again. The name then shows at the top of the app on wider screens.

Step 2Keep it up to date

After you change a saved post, the button reads Update. Tap it to store the changes. When there is nothing new to store it reads Saved.

Step 3Open a post later

Tap Open to see your saved posts, newest first. Tap one to load it. The bin icon deletes a post.

The list starts with a Photo Caption Template you can open and fill in.

Step 4Watch the character count

The bar at the bottom counts words and characters, and shows how many characters are left. It turns amber when you are close to the limit and red when you are over.

Step 5Choose the platform

Open the menu (≡), then Settings. Under Word count, pick where you are posting: Instagram (2,200), YouTube (5,000), TikTok (2,200), X (280), Threads (500), Facebook or LinkedIn (3,000). The counter follows your choice.

Step 6Switch to dark mode

In Settings, under Appearance, choose Dark. On a computer there is also a small switch at the top of the app. The first time you visit, the app follows your device's own setting. The pictures on this site show the app in dark mode.

Good to know

  • Saved posts live in this browser on this device. They are not uploaded, and there is no account. Clearing your browser's site data removes them, and they do not appear on your other devices.
  • Fancy characters can count for more than one against a platform's limit. If a caption is close to the limit, leave a little room.
  • To start again from an empty editor, use the reset button (the circular arrow). On a phone it is inside the ⋮ menu.

Try it yourself.
