Lists and your own bullets

Add bullet points to an Instagram caption: turn a few lines into a tidy list, then swap the dot for a flower, an arrow, or anything you can type.

Step 1Write each item on its own line

Type the first item, press Enter, type the next. Three or four short lines are enough to see how it works.

Step 2Turn the lines into a list

Select the lines, then tap the ⋮ button at the end of the bar. Choose the first icon for a bulleted list, or the second for a numbered list.

Tap the same icon again to turn the list back into ordinary lines.

Step 3Tap the bullet beside the list

While your cursor is inside a bulleted list, a small button showing the current bullet sits in the left margin. Tap it to open the Bullet picker.

Step 4Choose a bullet

Tap any bullet to try it. The list and the Output box change at once, and the picker stays open so you can try several. The labels along the top (Minimal, Soft, Floral, Arrows and more) narrow the choice.

Step 5Or type your own

At the bottom of the picker is a box marked Custom…. Type or paste one character, an emoji for instance, and tap Set.

Step 6Close the picker and copy

Tap anywhere outside the picker, or press Esc, to close it. Then tap Copy.

Good to know

  • Each list keeps its own bullet, so one caption can have a flower list and an arrow list.
  • To make a sub-list, put the cursor in an item and press Tab; it moves under the item above and takes a smaller bullet. Shift + Tab brings it back.
  • You can make the picker bigger or smaller: drag the small corner mark at its bottom right. The size is remembered.
  • Numbered lists come out as 1. 2. 3. and have no picker.
  • Every bullet in the picker is also on one page, ready to copy.

Try it yourself.
